Patriotism in Action: Teaching Flag Etiquette to Bethel’s Youth

Patriotism in rural Alaska is not just waving a flag on the Fourth of July — it is teaching the next generation why that flag matters. The VFW Auxiliary’s Americanism program brings respect for the Stars and Stripes into schools and community events across the Delta. Through flag presentations, proper folding demonstrations, and the annual Flag Poetry contest, we help Bethel’s children understand the sacrifices behind every red, white, and blue stripe.

Proper flag etiquette is simple but powerful: never let it touch the ground, raise it briskly at sunrise, lower it slowly at sunset, and always treat it with honor. These lessons build pride in our country while honoring the veterans who defended the freedoms we enjoy in even the most remote villages. Many of our own Auxiliary members learned these same rules as children and now pass them on.

Parents and teachers in Bethel, Napakiak, Kwethluk, and beyond can partner with us for classroom visits or youth events. Together we raise young Alaskans who know both their Yup’ik heritage and the meaning of American patriotism.
