The Buddy Poppy Story: Symbols of Sacrifice and Hope in Alaska
Bethel has always proudly submitted an entry to the Department of Alaska contest.
Every red Buddy Poppy you see pinned to a jacket in Bethel tells a story of sacrifice and hope. These paper flowers are handmade by disabled veterans at the VFW National Home and sold to raise money for veterans’ programs. When you buy or display a Buddy Poppy, you directly help veterans who gave so much for our country — including many from the Delta who still need support today.
Our Post 10041 has proudly earned 1st Place in the 2024-25 Buddy Poppy Contest (Category 3). We use the funds for local causes: Christmas cheer at the Alaska VFW Home, health and happiness programs, and assistance for families right here in our villages. The poppy reminds us that remembrance is an active verb — it means helping those who served.
